When Should You Go Waxing Before a Vacation?

When Should You Go Waxing Before a Vacation?

Waxing involves the removal of hair from the roots. This can cause skin irritation, which is why it is not advisable to expose waxed skin to any potential irritants within 24 hours post-wax. Professional bikini waxing places know the importance of giving awareness to their clients to prevent irritation.

This means that 24 hours after a waxing session, you  must not:

  • Swim or sunbathe
  • Undergo heat or UV treatments like saunas, tanning beds, etc.
  • Wear tight or unbreathable clothing
  • Wear scented products like lotions, deodorants, antiperspirants, self-tanner, or makeup
  • Avoid touching, rubbing, scrubbing, scratching, or sweating a lot

But besides this general advice, skin sensitivity post-waxing varies from person to person. And the less used to waxing a person is, the more prone his or her skin is to irritation. Therefore, if one were to go on vacation, it is best to schedule a waxing appointment two to three days before the trip.

Tips to Avoid Irritated Waxed Skin

Getting waxing done pulls hair from the roots, which not only leads to less dense hair growth over several waxing appointments. It also slows down hair growth! As a general rule, people who get waxing treatment only need hair removal every three to six weeks—making hair removal a quick, low-maintenance solution for unsightly or hard-to-reach hairs.

But in order to receive these waxing benefits, there are some key rules to follow to avoid having bumpy, splotchy, red, and chicken-skin-like texture post-wax.

Exfoliate

When waxing, the wax can adhere to dead skin instead of hairs, which can not only make the hair removal process less efficient but can also prolong the pulling off the wax and cause more pain.

Exfoliating within 24 hours before a waxing session helps remove dead skin cells, which helps ensure the wax adheres to the hair better, making it more effective at pulling hair out while also minimizing pain.

Soothe Skin

After having hair pulled from the roots, the skin will experience a throbbing and burning sensation, which can lead to irritation if not soothed immediately.

One of the best ways to soothe skin is to immediately apply pressure after pulling the wax off. Additionally, one can apply a cool compress, take a cold shower, or apply soothing products like aloe gel, skin serum, or wash with gentle soap and water.

Let Skin Breathe

After a waxing session, the skin is sensitive. Tight clothes which rub on sensitive skin or polyester clothing which don’t let the skin breathe are likely to cause irritation on the skin, which can make it itchy, red, and bumpy.

No Rubbing

Skin is sensitive post-wax, therefore any kind of touching, rubbing, scrubbing, and scratching is going to irritate the sensitive skin.

Avoid Exposure to Potential Irritants

As the skin is more sensitive post-wax, one can minimize irritation by avoiding exposure to all potential irritants. This includes not wearing any products with fragrance, and strong chemicals which may cause irritation or clog pores.

Examples of potential irritants include skincare products that contain fragrances, essential oils, alcohol, and active ingredients, as well as deodorants, antiperspirants, colognes, and perfumes.

No Intensive Exercise

Another often overlooked irritant to waxed skin is sweat, more particularly, excessive sweating. Therefore, it is important to avoid intensive workouts which may not only cause rubbing of the skin but also cause perspiration, which is a skin irritant.

Reduce Inflammation

For some people, especially those who are new to waxing, skin irritation may be inevitable despite following all the tips above.

When the burning or itching sensation on your waxed skin persists, do not scratch it, and instead apply over-the-counter cortisone cream to help reduce the inflammation.

If the skin irritation persists after a day or two, you can also try applying tea tree gel or aloe gel to the inflamed area. Tea tree oil is too harsh and potentially pore-clogging on waxed skin. Meanwhile, gel with some tea tree oil can work wonders to soothe inflammation and reduce the risk of infection.

Similarly, aloe gel which doesn’t include fragrance or alcohol can also provide soothing, moisturizing, and anti-inflammatory benefits.
